Importance of Review

As I mentioned before, I have returned to playing my guitar on a regular basis. The callouses have returned. And while I continue to learn new things, I continue to review and practice the fundamentals.

I was reminded of the importance of review and fundamentals tonight as I watched a couple of friends coach some of our church planters. We spent time talking about the importance of our story and God’s story. Then we practiced telling our stories and the gospel–something we have done many times.

It is surprising to me that while I am always returning to the fundamentals of music, I cannot help but think how often I fail to review the basics of personal evangelism and practice communicating the gospel. For some distorted reason, I do not have a problem playing major scales over-and-over again, then in thirds, then in fourths, then on one string, etc., but often feel that reviewing and retelling my story and God’s story is unnecessary.

Practicing the fundamentals is important in music; it is important in the faith, too.
