Yes, Eyes Must Observe, but Ears Must Hear

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34-35).

Christ’s love shown to the world and through His people is a powerful witness to the gospel. The community of saints now reflect a testimony of lives transformed and movement from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Christ. And such is extremely relevant for those who count the cost and realize they will lose family and home, friends and acquaintances, and jobs and business partners if they follow the Lord.

But notice the verse does not say: “All people will know how to become my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The fellowship of the saints is a centripetal force drawing a watching world. Such relationships are so important that Jesus is present where even two are gathered in His name and struggle with interpersonal conflict due to sin (Matt 18:15-20). The witness of the Church is at stake when fellowship is hindered. As a foreshadowing of life in the Kingdom come, the Church in the Kingdom now displays the family of God.

But this display is insufficient to bring regeneration. People do not know about repentance and faith and the why behind the love for one another. The see evidence of the good news but do not know the news. Lifestyles illustrate the power of the gospel but do not proclaim the gospel.

No one comes to experience this great love and community by observance.

Encourage eyes to observe but speak that ears may hear.
